3/26/08:   Hello Folks -

I have many of our older programs now, but I am still missing seasons
from 1995-96 through 2003-2004.
If you have these and will let me borrow them or make photo copies to
give to me that would be great. I
am also looking for someone who might be interested in putting all of
the programs together into a book
that could be browsed at our concerts during our 25th Anniversary
Season next year. We would probably
just want to do photocopy reproductions so that individuals' program
archives do not get damaged.

Thanks!
b best,
Cayenna.

STAND.

As many of you know, we are holding an orchestra meeting this Thursday
to discuss the need for board
involvement and volunteer support.

An overview of the sequence of events is as follows:
3.27.08
~ Orchestra meeting. Nomination/Volunteer forms distributed.

4.3.08
~ Nomination/Volunteer forms submitted.

Between 4.3.08 and 4.17.08
~ Nominating Committee convenes
~ Current Board of Directors reviews recommendations from the
Nominating Committee and confirms
acceptance of nominations from nominees.

4.17.08
~ Public Announcement of new Directors and Committee Chairs.

Several documents were circulated at the last rehearsal including the
2007 Annual report, a 10-year
retrospective financial statement and the Policies and Procedures
Manual, which defines the roles needed
to be filled in order to carry out the business of the orchestra. If
you were not at rehearsal or are not
playing this concert, please follow the URL's below to view and
download these papers. (The Bylaws were
not distributed at rehearsal and are only available electronically).

The URLs for the other documents passed out are:

(deleted)

The discussion will take place at 9:00pm (this is moved back a touch
from the original 8:30pm
announcement). Mary Diegert will be facilitating the discussion which
will be a venue for folks to ask
questions and receive clarification about where the orchestra is at and
what needs to be done to keep it
going in a positive and productive manner. At that time a
Nomination/Volunteer Form will be distributed.
The forms are not requested back until the following week so that
everyone has an opportunity to think
about how they might or might not be involved.

The URL to the Form is: (deleted)

A Nominating Committee selected by the current members of the board of
directors will review the
Nomination/Volunteer forms and make recommendations to the board of
directors. As soon as the
nominations have been accepted by the board and nominees, the
selections will be publicly announced.

This is a very important meeting. I look forward to seeing you all
there.
Best,
Cayenna.

3/18/08:   Hello Folks -

Tim Perry has made it possible for us to rehearse in the Music
Department room 111 at Binghamton
University. There is metered parking that will be free by 7pm right
outside the main doors and there is
parking behind the building as well. If you are unfamiliar with how to
get to the Music Department at the
University let me know and I will help as much as I can. I believe
that Room 111 is the main rehearsal
room in the corner of the first floor.

The Grainger is in and the rehearsal schedule will be as follows:

7:30 String Sectional on Dvorak Mvt. 1 and 3
8:00 Grainger - Full orchestra including percussion and tuba

8:50 Dvorak mvt. 1

HOWEVER - March 20th is Holy Thursday and I know that some people have
other committments. I understand if you are not able to attend this

ALSO - the schools will be closed and I imagine many churches will be
having functions of their own that night. We do still need a rehearsal
location, suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks all!!

2/26/08:   To facilitate discussions on the future of the BCO board, I have added links to the By-Laws, the Committee Handbook (called the Policies and Procedures manual), and my Annual Report to the Board on the state of the orchestra for 2007 to the Board of Directors webpage. Just click the link to the left.

2/19/08:   Hello BCO!

Congratulations on a fine Ballroom Bash! So far I have heard many
positive comments. Thank you ALL
for your contributions that made this possible. Many hands made light
work!

I am very excited about getting to work on this upcoming concert. We
are playing Dvorak, Weinberger and
Rachmaninoff and the concert will feature STMTA concerto competition
winner, Colin Lu. The repertoire
calls for full woodwinds and brass.

Rehearsal this week will be a the Methodist Church in Vestal. This is
the same location that we have had
rehearsal in the past when the Schools have been closed. The address
is: 328 Main Street, Vestal, NY 13850.

See you there!

Best,
Cayenna.

11/4/07 (corr 11/6):   Hello BCO -

I wanted to take a minute and make sure everyone is in the know about what the orchestra is doing and planning for the rest of this season and some into next. There is lots of important information in this email - please read ALL THE WAY THROUGH it is long!!!:)

Last Thursday's Impromptu Fireside Chat Last Thursday we took part of rehearsal to discuss where the orchestra is at and where we want to go as a community ensemble. We discussed many possibilities of collaborations and outreach into the Binghamton Community and beyond. Thank you for all of you ideas. I am still very interested in hearing from people as you think about the ways that each of you individually might be able to help facilitate or organize a collaboration with the network of individuals in your lives.

I have already followed up with at least one of the suggestions: to give a joint concert with the Youth Symphony. Barry Peters is very excited about this possibility and we are putting our heads together to find a way to make it happen next year (likely during March).

Conversations with Jim Richardson who organizes Music on the Delaware in Walton, might take us that direction next year to collaborate with their community and students.

For those of you who are not playing in this concert - we are missing you and are looking forward to having you back with us. It is just not the same orchestra without the low brass section!;)

Holiday Run-out:
There are many conflicts with a November 29th Run-out, further in December it will become more difficult to schedule a concert. Let's take that off our plate for this year. I apologize if I am letting anyone down with that decision.

HOWEVER:

December 6th Rehearsal and Ballroom Bash:
Regular Rehearsal time for a read-through of Ballroom Bash music. The Bash music requires EVERYONE – so brass, come in full force. The repertoire includes Strauss Waltzes, Brahms Hungarian dances, Smetana’s Dances (or dance) from the Bartered Bride, a Bach violin and oboe concerto featuring our very own Doug Diegert and Kathy Karlsen, your all time favorite “Twentiana” and a smattering of tunes with a jazz vocalist including All of Me and Love Is Here To Stay.

We will not rehearse on November 29th or on any other day in December. Rehearsals for the Ballroom Bash will start on January 3rd. The Bash is Saturday, February 9th from 6-10pm at the Polish Community Center, 347 Prospect Street near Route 17.

There will only be 100 tickets sold to the Ballroom Bash (as that is all we have room for) and they will go on sale on Nov. 18th at our concert. Tickets are $45/single and $80/couple (if I am mistaken someone please correct me quickly!) The dinner at the Polish Community Center is around $20.00 a person (might be up or down a few cents) and any orchestra members wishing to have dinner will need to pay for their meal (the orchestra will not be playing until around 7:30 so if people are interested in eating before they come that will work just as well.)

Spring Concert:
This year’s spring Concert, America: A Musical Melting Pot, will feature our two STMTA Concerto Competition Winners along with Dvorak Symphony No. 9, “New World.” It will take place on Sunday, April 27th. A few of you have already told me you would not be available for this concert, if you have not, please let me know ASAP. This is a very large and difficult piece but it will be our main focus in the spring and just a ton of fun to work on and perform.

Rehearsal this Week:
Pattie Sunwoo will be with us this week.
7:30 Mozart Concerto
8:20 Break
8:30 Haydn
No Mozart Symphony

Thank you all for your dedication to the Community Orchestra. It is a
joy and an honor to be working with
you!

Very Best,
Cayenna.

10/23/07:   Hello BCO -

Rehearsal this week:
All woodwinds, brass and string for this concert
7:30 Mozart Concerto
8:15 Mozart sym.
8:30 Break
8:40 Hadyn

I have not received confrimation on the Runout concert that I was
trying to organize in Walton. If it is not confirmed by this Thursday, we
will be planning a visit to a local nursing home in December. Please
tell me if you WOULD NOT be available for a Thursday evening runout to a
retirement community on Thursday, November 29th. This would include
some of the repertoire from our summer runout concert so full woodwinds
and brass would be needed.

The Community Orchestra Festival was a smashing success thanks to all
of you who were able to participate this year. For those that were not
able to attend, we are looking into a similar event next year.

See ya Thursday!
Best,
Cayenna.

10/25/2007:  Hello Festival Participants -

Quick reminder that you will need to bring a music stand to this weekend's event. Sorry if that was not clear earlier.

Looking forward to seeing all of you!!!
Best,
Cayenna.

10/24/2007:  Hello All -

Just a reminder that there is NO REHEARSAL this week. Our next rehearsal is November 1st.

Very Best,

9/10/07:   Hello BCO -

Just a reminder that our first rehearsal is just around the corner! We
will still be rehearsing at West Middle School and
as always rehearsals are from 7:30-9:30 on Thursday Evenings. So mark
your calendar again for September 13th.

Our Concert this Fall is "Viennese Classics" on Sunday, November 18th
at 4pm at the First Presbyterian Church in
Binghamton and will feature our favorite local soloists in the
Beethoven Triple Concerto - Pej Reitz, piano, Hakan
Hromek, cello, Patricia SunWoo, violin.

We will not need low brass for this concert although we will need a
timpanist. We WILL need low brass for First
Night(if we are choosen) and for the February Ballroom Bash (Waltz
Night) and also for the Spring concert. So keep
the BCO in your calendars!!

IMPORTANT
Tammy Nist has this year's Enjoy the City Books and will be passing
them out at the first rehearsal. We have 125 of
them to sell (just a couple per person!). We need to have all of the
money in by the first week in December.

Also - if you are interested in participating in the Fingerlakes
Community Orchestra Festival I have attached a
registration sheet. I will have more at rehearsal for people who would
rather fillout a hard copy. Please get these to
me ASAP so that we can get music out to people.

Looking forward to seeing all of you then!
Very best,
Cayenna

7/12/07:  Hello BCO!

Hope this summer has been treating you well. The weather has been
lovely and mild and we are continuing to work
on the house.

Each summer we have a reading rehearsal or two and sometimes a concert.
This year, as with last, we will have a
private (not open) rehearsal followed by a concert at a local
retirement home. Please let me know if you will be
attending or not so that I can have a better shot a picking appropriate
literature.

If anyone has suggestions for a rehearsal and/or potluck location
please drop me a line. As for the potluck, if people
can tell me what they are planning to bring (roughly) when they RSVP
then we can plan on filling holes. I am
volunteering to bring paper plates, forks, knives, spoons, napkins and
cups. (If anyone is planning to bring soup let
me know so I can bring bowls!)

The schedule is as follows:
Thursday, August 9th
6:00 Potluck
7:30 Rehearsal
Location: TBA

Monday, August 13th
7:00 call
7:30 Concert
St. Louise Manor

Looking forward to seeing all of you again!
Very best,
Cayenna.

4/30/07:  Good Morning Binghamton Community Orchestra -

Congratulations on a fine concert! EVERYONE contributed greatly to making our final performance of this season a tremendous success. The attention, focus and committment that this music required was met by our ensemble in a beautiful way. It was a joy and a treat to be a part of such wonderful music making with all of you. Thanks for a rewarding season!

As the summer progresses I will send out an email regarding the summer reading rehearsal/retirement center performance(s). Enjoy your summer Thursday evenings off:)

Very best,
Cayenna.

2/24/07:
The Board of Directors approved the Draft Revised Bylaws (in PDF format) on January 9, 2007. Day-to-day operation of the orchestra is to be carried out by several committees. A draft Policies and Procedures Manual (in Word format) is intended to guide these committees. Updates and modifications to this manual are encouraged and expected.

11/10/06:
The Board of Directors will discuss and vote on revised By-Laws for the BCO at its December 5 meeting. Since this effects all members of the orchestra, please take the time to look over the Draft Bylaws (in PDF format) and send any concerns or suggestions to any Board member. The list of Board members may be found under a button to the left.

To summarize the major changes, the new Board of Directors will concentrate on fundraising and promotion, and will delegate the day-to-day, behind-the-scenes operation of the orchestra to a set of "Orchestra Committees". These committees will carry out most of the tasks done in the past by the Board. These committees will probably not be comprised of board members, but rather by the same volunteers who have done the work in the past. This should free the Board to cultivate and pursue corporate sponsors and large donors. A Policies and Procedures Manual will be developed for Orchestra Committees, and should be expected to change through time. Therefore, this Manual should not be part of the By-Laws. A very-rough Draft version of such a manual can be found here (again in PDF format). This is really just a placeholder to give you and idea of the sort of Orchestra Committees envisioned. Some will come and go. For example, the Waltz Night committee is currently meeting, gathering information and making plans. When the next Waltz Night is planned a couple of years from now, that committee can benefit from the guidelines written up by the current committee in this Manual.

The proposed Board of Directors would consist of 11-15 members, five of whom are elected by the Player Members of the orchestra. The responsibilities and expectations of Board members is spelled out in the By-Laws and Board members may be removed for failing to carry out these responsibilites. It is also possible in very extreme circumstances for the Player Members to vote to dissolve the Board of Directors. For these reasons it is necessary to specify who are active Player Members. Basically, new members are admitted at the discretion of the Music Director. A member can take a leave of absense for up to a year (e.g. if you won't be able to play the next concert), but a player who fails to attend rehearsals or concerts for a period of a year will automatically become inactive, and therefore ineligible to vote. Players may be removed only by agreement between the Music Director and the majority of the Board. A manual of expectations and responsibilities of Player Members will be developed, and a Player Personnel Committee will facilitate communication between players and the Music Director.

Officers are elected by the Board and consist of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The President forms and coordinates the work of the Orchestra Committees, so it will be important for the President to function well with the Player members of those committees.

If you would like any further information on these revised By-Laws, the discussions and process leading up to them, or the anticipated transition from one operating model to the other, please email me at jbarker@binghamton.edu. Again, you may give your comments or concerns to any Board member. If you have any suggestions of good, potential new Board members, please let me know.

Jeff
